I was born and raised along the Nakasendo, and my great-grandfather was a bakuro—a horse handler who worked along this historic road. For me, the Nakasendo is not simply a destination. It is home. For instance, at Ichikokutochi Tateba Chaya, a handful of local volunteers continue to preserve this historic teahouse simply because they believe it should remain for future generations. The same spirit can be found in the mountain rice terraces, built stone by stone through years of extraordinary effort. These places are more than beautiful landscapes. They reveal the resilience, kindness, and quiet spirit of rural Japan. That is the Japan I hope my guests will discover.
