What Makes My Journeys Different?

I was born and raised along the Nakasendo, and my great-grandfather was a bakuro—a horse handler who worked along this historic road. For me, the Nakasendo is not simply a destination. It is home. Every private journey is thoughtfully curated around the interests of my guests, whether they are drawn to history, craftsmanship, food culture, nature, or the quieter side of rural Japan. My role is not simply to guide the way, but to help guests experience a side of Japan that rarely appears in guidebooks. Whether walking the trail or exploring by private car, each journey is designed to create a deeper and more personal connection with the Nakasendo. For travelers seeking more than sightseeing, that difference matters.

My Philosophy

Beyond Famous Places

Most visitors come to the Nakasendo to see beautiful post towns and famous landmarks. As someone born and raised along the Nakasendo, I tell the stories of the people and culture that have given life to this historic road for generations. For instance, at Ichikokutochi Tateba Chaya, a handful of local volunteers continue to preserve this historic teahouse simply because they believe it should remain for future generations. The same spirit can be found in the mountain rice terraces, built stone by stone through years of extraordinary effort. These places are more than beautiful landscapes. They reveal the resilience, kindness, and quiet spirit of rural Japan. That is the Japan I hope my guests will discover.

Unforgettable Journey

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Ryo is an exceptional person, which truly makes him a remarkable guide. His gentle encouragement and patience helped me succeed in this mountain hiking challenge, even though I was nearly eighty and unsure if I could walk the pass. He guided us to special rest stops, waterfalls, and charming historic towns, creating a deeply fulfilling experience for mind, body, and spirit.

Takayama 1 Day Trip

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

We had the pleasure of a private tour with Ryo in Takayama, and his excellent English and thoughtful manner made the experience most enjoyable. He gave us a deeper understanding of Japanese life and guided us along a very well-considered arrangement to the key sights. His local knowledge and detailed explanations made the day both meaningful and memorable.

Amazing Ryo

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Ryo was an amazing guide with great English and deep knowledge of Japanese culture. He made the experience personal, flexible, and engaging, always adjusting the tour to our interests. At Atsuta Shrine, he even wrote an ema, a traditional wooden plaque for prayers, and prayed for our daughter’s success in her exams, which meant so much to our family. His kindness and warm personality made the day unforgettable and absolutely worth every penny.

Samurai Road

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

We were two friends visiting Japan for the first time and had a wonderful trekking experience with Ryo. He was warm, friendly, and great company throughout the journey. Walking together along the historic trail created a truly special and memorable experience. He also shared a touching and little-known story about the Samurai Road that we had never read in any guidebooks, which made the journey even more meaningful.

KISO VALLEY by Private Car

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

We enjoyed a relaxed and beautiful journey through this region, rich in both history and natural beauty. Ryo could not have been more kind, attentive, and knowledgeable, and he made our family feel comfortable throughout the day. From our hotel in Nagoya City to Magome, a beautiful waterfall, and Tsumago, we truly felt as though we had traveled back to the Edo period. Best of all, we walked less than 2 km in total! From hotel pickup to hotel drop-off, the tour offered minimal walking while still providing a meaningful and authentic experience. For our family with two young girls, this was the perfect private car tour.

Cultural & Spiritual Insight

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

As devoted Muslims, this was our first journey to Japan. During our trip, we wished to better understand how Buddhism, Shinto, and Confucianism have influenced the values and daily lives of Japanese people, yet we struggled to find a guide who could explain these ideas in a clear and meaningful way. After listening to Ryo’s thoughtful guidance in Takayama, we finally gained the understanding we were seeking. His depth of knowledge, cultural sensitivity, and ability to provide profound insight into Japanese history are truly exceptional. We strongly recommend Ryo as a refined and knowledgeable curator of cultural experiences.
