Private car tour offers two distinct ways to experience the Nakasendo. Guests who wish to walk the full trail can enjoy comfortable private transportation from their hotel in Nagoya to the Nakasendo and back again. Guests who prefer minimal walking can experience the most meaningful scenery, historic post towns, local stories, and cultural highlights without a full-day hike.　

The same private tour fee applies to both the full-walk and private-car highlight options.

Ryo personally drives and guides each private journey, with departures available from Nagoya, Nakatsugawa, Matsumoto, Takayama, and other locations. The route, walking distance, and pace are tailored to your comfort and interests.

Two Ways to Experience the Nakasendo by Private Car

Option A

Comfort and Freedom—Before and After Your Walk

Private car travel offers comfort, flexibility and easy access to the Nakasendo.

Travel comfortably from your Nagoya hotel and back, enjoy either a full or shorter hike, and relax throughout the journey.

Option B

Meaningful Experiences with Minimal Walking

For guests who prefer minimal walking, the route can be carefully adjusted to include the most meaningful scenery, post towns, stories, and cultural encounters without a full-day hike. Of course, from your Nagoya hotel and back.

Nakasendo Cultural Experience
(Narai and Kiso-Hirasawa) — 1 Day

Walk historic Torii Pass, or explore Narai and Kiso lacquerware culture by private car.

Discover one of the most atmospheric sections of the Nakasendo in the way that best suits you. Walk the historic route from Yabuhara over Torii Pass to Narai, or travel by private car and focus on the preserved streets of Narai and the lacquerware culture of Kiso-Hirasawa with only gentle walking.

Choose Your Way to Travel

Option A

Torii Pass Full Walk

Walk approximately 6 km from Yabuhara over historic Torii Pass to Narai-juku. After the walk, continue comfortably by private car to Kiso-Hirasawa before returning to your hotel. After arriving in Narai, Ryo will return to Yabuhara by taxi to collect the private car, then drive back to Narai to pick you up.

Option B

Cultural Highlights by Private Car

Explore Narai’s one-kilometer historic streetscape and continue by private car to Kiso-Hirasawa. Meet artisans, discover lacquerware, and enjoy the cultural depth of the Kiso Valley with approximately 1.5 km of gentle walking.

Narai-juku

Narai-juku, the thirty-fourth post town on the Nakasendo, prospered during the Edo period as “Narai of a Thousand Houses.” Why has so much of its historic character survived along its one-kilometer-long streetscape? Ryo will share the story with you.

Kiso-Hirasawa

Kiso-Hirasawa is a town renowned for its lacquerware, with workshops and shops throughout its historic streets. Largely untouched by tourism, it retains its traditional character. Whether you wish to meet local artisans, experience lacquerware making, or purchase a special piece, Ryo will tailor your visit to your interests.

Highlight 03

Torii Pass

Walk through peaceful forest and mountain scenery as you follow the historic Nakasendo over Torii Pass from Yabuhara toward Narai. The old trail offers a rewarding sense of traveling in the footsteps of those who crossed the pass centuries ago.

Kiso-Fukushima

Kiso-Fukushima was a checkpoint town where officials strictly controlled firearms entering Edo and women leaving it. This history is also connected to the Nakasendo’s nickname, the “Princess Road.” If you wish, Ryo can include Kiso-Fukushima as an optional destination.

Sample Itinerary

08:30 Departure from your hotel in Nagoya. (around 9:30 a.m. in Nakatsugawa)

Morning: Torii Pass or Narai-juku
Choose the complete walk from Yabuhara over Torii Pass to Narai, or begin with a relaxed private-car visit to Narai-juku and its beautifully preserved streets.

Lunch
Enjoy lunch around Narai or the Kiso Valley, depending on the season and your preference.

Afternoon: Kiso-Hirasawa lacquerware experience
After the walk or Narai visit, continue comfortably by private car to Kiso-Hirasawa, a historic lacquerware town. Depending on availability, you may visit a lacquerware workshop, try a simple lacquerware-making experience, or enjoy assistance when selecting locally made pieces.　If time permits, Kiso-Fukushima may also be included, depending on your chosen route and activities. The lacquerware experience requires an additional fee of approximately JPY 4,000 per person.

late afternoonRelax in the private car on the return journey to your hotel in Nagoya or Nakatsugawa. If you choose Option A—the full walk from Yabuhara to Narai —you will arrive at your hotel in Nagoya at around 7:00 p.m. (around 5:30 p.m. in Nakatsugawa) If you choose Option B, you can usually return to your hotel about one hour earlier than with Option A, depending on the places you choose to visit.

Full walk: Approximately 6 km from Yabuhara to Narai via Torii Pass, with about 300 m of ascent and descent.
Private-car highlights: Approximately 1.5 km on mostly flat terrain, adjustable according to your comfort.
