Nakasendo Highlights
(Magome & Tsumago) 1 Day

A private car journey into Japan’s Edo-period past — with minimal walking.

This private car tour is designed for guests who would like to experience the atmosphere of the historic Nakasendo Trail without a long hike. With only minimal walking, you can still enjoy the feeling of stepping back in time to the Edo period, visiting beautifully preserved post towns, stone-paved slopes, mountain views, and quiet old streets.

Itinerary

09:00 Departure from your hotel in Nagoya or Nakatsugawa

Morning: Magome-juku
We visit Magome, one of the most beautiful post towns on the Nakasendo Trail. You can enjoy the stone-paved street, traditional houses, waterwheels, small local shops, and a scenic viewpoint overlooking the Kiso Valley. We also stop at places connected with the old highway atmosphere, including the Ichikoku-teahouse area and other quiet historic corners.

Lunch
Enjoy a local lunch around the Nakasendo area. Depending on the season and your preference, I can suggest a simple local restaurant, a relaxed countryside lunch, or a short café stop.

Afternoon: Tsumago-juku
We continue by private car to Tsumago, one of the best-preserved Edo-period post towns in Japan. Unlike a large bus tour, this private journey allows you to walk slowly through the old street, enjoy the wooden buildings, and feel the quiet atmosphere of the former samurai road.

17:00 Return to your hotel in Nagoya or Nakatsugawa

Walking Distance

Approximately 2 km in total. Magome includes a gentle uphill walk of several dozen meters, but the walking distance can be adjusted according to your preference. This tour is ideal for guests who want the beauty and history of the Nakasendo without a full-day hike.
