Overview
A calm 8 km journey with approximately 200 m of ascent and 400 m of descent, unfolding through forest paths, old stone walkways, and beautifully preserved post towns, at a relaxed pace of around four hours.
This private walk from Magome to Tsumago follows one of the most evocative sections of the historic Nakasendo. Guided by Ryo Yoshimura, the experience weaves together heritage, nature, and quiet discovery in a single day.
As you walk, Ryo shares stories passed down through the region over generations. Through these narratives, you are gently invited to reflect on the lives of people in the Edo period and to consider why the Nakasendo came to be known as the Samurai Road.

A Suggested Flow — Thoughtfully Timed for Comfort and Grace
This itinerary is flexible and can be tailored to your pace and preferences.
Travel between Nakatsugawa and Magome, and between Tsumago and Nagiso, is generally assumed to be by taxi. As this is a remote area, taxi travel allows you to use your time more effectively. The fare is approximately ¥4,000 and ¥2,000 respectively. Bus travel can also be arranged, of course.

A gentle welcome in Magome, where Ryo provides a refined 20-minute orientation on the Nakasendo, offering insight into its history and cultural significance, along with an overview of the route to Tsumago.

A graceful walk through this rare post town built along a slope on the Nakasendo. As you walk, you begin to sense the true meaning of the Samurai Road.

Into the forest
Ascend the gentle slopes of the Nakasendo, walking toward Magome Pass. Along the way, enjoy the quiet sounds of flowing water and birdsong in the forest.

Magome Pass
Cross the highest point of the route before continuing toward Tsumago. From here, the path reveals its finest moments—cypress and cedar forests, beautifully preserved stone paving, and untouched waterfalls.

Arrive in Tsumago and enjoy a relaxed late lunch.

Tsumago-juku Exploration
Walk through beautifully preserved Tsumago on the Nakasendo. You may visit historic residences, explore traditional shops, or stop by local shrines and temples. The experience can be arranged according to your interests.

End of the Tour
The experience gently concludes, with Ryo assisting you onward to your next destination in comfort and ease.
Guide fee: USD 250 for 1 guest, USD 300 for 2 to 3 guests, and USD 400 for 4 to 6 guests, tax included. Transportation, meals, and entrance fees are not included. After arrival at the destination, assistance with arranging taxis and JR train travel will be provided.
